Glossary
The words yourfinance uses, in the app's own terms. Examples use the demo dataset on a made-up ticker, DEMO.
- Assignment
- The option's buyer exercises it. For a put you sold, you buy the shares at the strike; for a call you sold, your shares are sold at the strike: they are called away.
- Atomic
- Atomic means every linked change is saved together or none is saved. A roll, for example: the buy-back and the new sale are saved together, or neither is.
- Buy to close
- Buying back an option you sold, which settles it. Its credit less the cost to close is then realized. In the demo, 180 − 30 = 150.
- Called away
- Your shares are sold at the strike of a call you sold, because it was assigned. When no shares are left, the cycle is complete.
- Canonical event
- A canonical event is the authoritative recorded fact used in those calculations, and a correction adds a new event instead of erasing history. Every figure yourfinance shows is worked out from these events.
- Cash-secured put
- A put you sell while keeping the cash to buy the shares at the strike, if it is assigned.
- Contract
- One option contract covers 100 shares.
- Correction
- A new event that puts an earlier one right. The earlier event stays in the history; nothing is erased.
- Covered call
- A call you sell on shares you own, one contract for each 100 shares. In the demo, 3 calls at 22.00 on 300 shares.
- Cycle
- On one ticker, the stretch from the first shares until all of them have left. Premium-adjusted basis counts only the current cycle's premium, and a new cycle starts without the old premium.
- Decision Desk
- The yourfinance screen that lists what needs a decision, ranked. It orders attention; it does not recommend a trade or contact a broker.
- DTE
- DTE means calendar days to expiry. It counts down to the day the option expires.
- Expired worthless
- An option that reaches its expiry without being exercised. Its whole credit is then realized, and the obligation ends.
- Gross premium is opening cash; it is not realized profit while the option remains open. Also called premium collected. In the demo, 420: 180 from the first call and 240 from the second.
- Ledger
- A ledger is the local history of confirmed financial facts used to calculate the workspace; it is not a broker account. Everything yourfinance shows is worked out from it, on your computer.
- Licence key
- A licence key is the YF- code from your purchase e-mail; it is verified on this computer against the public key built into the app, nothing is sent anywhere, and there is no activation count.
- Obligation
- An obligation is what the option contract may require, such as delivering shares or paying cash. For a covered call, delivering your shares at the strike; for a cash-secured put, paying the strike for the shares.
- The credit of options that are still open. It has been collected, but a buy-back or an assignment can still take some or all of it back. In the demo, 240.
- Premium-adjusted basis subtracts eligible active-cycle option P&L. In plain words: your share cost, lowered only by the option premium you have kept in the current cycle. In the demo, 21.50 becomes 21.00.
- Rank
- Rank 1 is reviewed before higher numbers. The Decision Desk ranks what needs a decision, so the most pressing comes first.
- Raw basis
- Raw basis is broker-recorded share cost. What you paid per share, as your broker records it. Options never change it. In the demo, 21.50.
- Realized option P&L
- Settled option credits minus closing debits and option fees. In the demo, 150.
- Roll
- Buying back an option and selling another, usually with a later expiry, as one decision. yourfinance records both legs as one event.
- Strike
- The price at which the option's shares change hands if it is assigned.
- Tier
- A tier is what your key unlocks: Trial (free, no key: every feature for 10 days from first launch, then read-only with exports and backups still working), Beginner (one account, unlimited positions, and every analysis tool: rolls, scenarios, operating policy, the journal, research, imports and exports), or Pro (everything in Beginner, unlimited accounts and connectors).
- Trial
- The trial is what runs without a key: the sample workspace it seeds is tagged as a sample and never leaves the app in an export.
- Weekly review
- A once-a-week list of what is expiring, what is due and anything missing, which you mark complete.
- Wheel (the strategy)
- Selling cash-secured puts until shares are assigned, then covered calls on those shares until they are called away, then puts again.
- Wheel position
- A wheel position links shares and option contracts that belong to the same income cycle. In the demo, the 300 DEMO shares and the calls sold on them.
