Where your data lives
Everything yourfinance records stays in one folder on your computer. What is in it, what is kept elsewhere, and why you should not edit it by hand.
One folder, on your computer
On a Mac, yourfinance keeps everything in ~/Library/Application Support/yourfinance. There is no yourfinance account and no server holding your records: this folder is the only copy, apart from the backups you make.
On Windows, the folder is %APPDATA%\yourfinance, except in the Microsoft Store edition (the last answer on this page).
Inside it:
data: your records. Positions, options, their events, the decision desk and the journal.product: your settings and licence key, the research ledger, copies of the backups you export, and the backups the app makes itself.logs: a small rotating log of when the app started and stopped. It holds no records.
What is kept elsewhere
Keys you enter for broker and exchange connectors are kept in the macOS Keychain (on Windows, the Credential Manager), not in this folder. They are never shown again in the app, and they are not in backups or exports.
Backups the app keeps by itself
Each time it starts, yourfinance saves a startup backup, and it keeps the last 7 startup backups. Before a restore, it also keeps a copy of what was there. Both are in the product folder.
Do not edit the files by hand
The records are written in a careful way, all of a change or none of it, and a file that cannot be read is set aside with a notice instead of breaking the rest. Editing them by hand can break that. To correct a record, use the app, where a correction is added to the history rather than written over it. To move or keep your data, use Export backup in Settings & recovery.
Where does the Microsoft Store edition keep its records?
In Windows' own storage for the app, which Windows removes when the app is uninstalled. Before you uninstall it, or reinstall it to fix a problem, use Export backup in Settings and keep the .zip somewhere else.
