Backup and restore
Export everything in one file, restore it later or on another computer, and what the app backs up by itself. What a backup holds, and what it leaves out.
Export a backup
In Settings & recovery, under Data & recovery, the Portable backup card has Export backup. It saves your records, your decision desk, your settings and your research in one .zip file, and asks where to save it, starting in your Downloads folder. Keep a copy somewhere other than your computer.
A backup leaves out:
- the sample workspace;
- keys you entered for connectors, which stay in the Keychain (the Credential Manager on Windows);
- photos sent from the phone app, which stay on the computer.
What the app backs up by itself
Each time it starts, yourfinance saves a startup backup and keeps the last 7 startup backups on your computer.
Restore a backup
Press Restore backup on the same card and choose the file. The app asks first, “Restore this backup?”, and makes a pre-restore backup of what is there before it changes anything. Then it shows what it did: “Backup restored”, with the number of positions, open options and journal entries before and after.
A restore replaces what is in the app with what is in the file, all at once. It also works when the trial has ended and the app is read-only.
Moving to another computer
Export a backup on the old computer, and copy the file across however you like. On the new one, install yourfinance, restore the file, and paste the same licence key. Keys for connectors have to be entered again, because they stayed in the old computer’s Keychain.
Should I export a backup before I uninstall the Microsoft Store edition?
Yes. Windows removes a Store app's own storage, and your records with it, when the app is uninstalled or reinstalled. On Windows, if you use the Microsoft Store edition, export a backup before you uninstall it, and keep the .zip somewhere else.
